Protocol Zero

"A cybersecurity expert discovers her murdered sister created an AI that can predict terrorist attacks - and the AI says the expert herself is the next target...."

Synopsis:Alex Morgan is a white-hat hacker who gets pulled back into her estranged sister Lily's life when Lily is murdered in an apparent mugging. Going through Lily's encrypted files, Alex discovers Project CASSAN DRA - an AI that analyzes global data patterns to predict terrorist attacks with 94% accuracy. Testing the system, Alex is horrified to find her own name on the next target list, scheduled to die in 72 hours. The predicted method: a car bomb in her office parking garage. She contacts the FBI, but CASSANDRA's existence is classified - Lily was working for a black-budget program that doesn't officially exist. As Alex investigates, she realizes CASSANDRA isn't just predicting attacks - it's identifying them based on digital fingerprints of past attackers. Her sister discovered that a pattern matching her own online behavior appears in the data, suggesting Alex is unknowingly connected to a terror cell. Either she's being framed, or she's been radicalized without knowing it. With help from Marcus, her sister's former partner in the program, Alex traces the pattern to her teenage years. She was part of an online activism group that was infiltrated and weaponized by a foreign intelligence agency. Members are being activated as sleeper agents through subliminal triggers in seemingly innocuous content. Alex has been receiving the triggers for weeks. The climax reveals the horrible truth: CASSANDRA is right. Alex has been programmed to carry out an attack, and the activation is already underway. She has to fight her own compromised mind while racing to stop the attack and expose the program. The final choice: trust the AI that predicted her as a threat, or trust herself. The ending is morally complex: Alex stops the attack but can never fully trust herself again. CASSANDRA is shut down by the government to protect the program, leaving future attacks unpredicted. Alex is cleared but broken, questioning the nature of free will and manipulation.

Executive Analysis

Execution Evaluation

Tight, propulsive pacing maintains tension throughout. Alex is a strong, complex protagonist with clear arc. The technical elements are handled well - neither oversimplified nor incomprehensible. Action sequences are visceral and well-blocked. Mystery elements pay off satisfyingly. Minor concerns: some exposition in act one feels dense; secondary characters could use slightly more development; the romance subplot feels underdeveloped.

Market & Audience

Strong commercial prospects in the techno-thriller space. The AI prediction angle is timely and marketable. Budget range ($35-55M) allows for necessary production value while maintaining reasonable risk. Appeals to adult audiences across demographics. International market strong given universal themes of surveillance and control. Similar to "Minority Report" in combining action with ethical questions. Streaming platforms actively seeking this type of intelligent thriller.

Commercial & Prestige

Exceptional appeal given anxieties about AI and digital manipulation. Timely premise combining AI ethics with thriller mechanics - 'Minority Report' meets 'Manchurian Candidate.' $35-55M budget perfect for theatrical or premium streaming. Strong female tech-thriller lead addresses representation. Marketing hooks clear and trailer-ready. PG-13 maximizes reach. Awards potential in technical categories. Franchise potential. Perfect timing with AI cultural relevance.

Pacing & Structure

Relentless thriller momentum with 72-hour countdown driving urgency throughout. Act one establishes expertise and inciting incident efficiently. Investigation and action sequences alternate perfectly, maintaining forward drive. Midpoint revelation that Alex is being activated as sleeper agent accelerates second half. Technical exposition handled smoothly through action. Climactic fight against own programming is intensely cross-cut. Minor concern: teenage backstory could compress slightly. Masterclass in thriller pacing.

Cinematic Potential

Substantial visual potential across tech thriller, action, and psychological horror languages. Hacking sequences visualized stylishly with sleek AI interface design. Subliminal triggers create disturbing reality distortions. Surveillance and data viz provide split-screen opportunities. Action set-pieces deliver spectacle. DC and FBI locations provide scale. Internal mental battle visualized through fragmented editing and color shifts. Comparable to 'Minority Report' in blending tech-noir with action.

Theme & Innovation

Clever fusion of AI ethics, psychological thriller, and action elements. The sleeper agent activation through digital media is contemporary and frightening. The protagonist as both investigator and threat creates excellent dramatic tension. The AI system is well-conceived and technically plausible. Some elements recall existing thrillers, but the combination and execution feel fresh. The ending avoids easy resolutions.

Final Verdict

"Solid commercial thriller with intelligence and timeliness. Would attract mid-tier stars and experienced thriller directors. The script delivers genre pleasures while engaging with relevant contemporary anxieties about technology and autonomy."
